Improve Reading Skill

From the recent post we've learned that the rate of student's improvement may considered bad,to check the statistics of the slow phased performance and the culprit click here.
A decline rate of reading reflects a decline literacy, and that is seriously scary, so what do we do? how do we persuade ourselves and commit on reading?when do we start? where to start? is it worth it?
These are some of the questions comes first to mind whenever reading has brought  out to a topic, for some reason these queries somehow prevent oneself from grabbing a book browse to pages and read.

Is reading really important? yes, reading is a very important part of our lives. We need to take time everyday and read at least 20 to 30 minutes a day. It really helps when you read out  aloud. You can hear yourself and see how you pronounce your words. Your reading will improve if you keep reading out aloud. You should take whatever steps needed to help you learn the Art of Reading.Reading can be improved in many ways. Being able to read fluently  helps with comprehension  Below are some helpful tips/ways to improve reading skills, read on.

Set aside a regular time to read.
Studies show that regularly reading will produce significant gains in reading comprehension, vocabulary, and the decoding of words.
Create questions the reading should answer
In addition to a general purpose, it’s also helpful to write down specific questions. This focuses your mind on a set of objectives and gives you a way to measure comprehension. By writing down questions, you create a set of mental cues. Whenever you spot an important keyword in the text, you’ll become aware of the question it relates to and your mind will start looking for an answer.
Pay attention to supporting cues.
Study pictures, graphs and headings. Read the first and last paragraph in a chapter, or the first sentence in each section.
Take notes or highlight important concepts
One of the best ways to embed something in your memory is to write it down. When you read an important point, make a note of it on a separate piece of paper, inside the margin, or use a highlighter. This will help you remember what you read and make the important sections easy to find when you review the text.
Build a good vocabulary.
For most educated people, this is a lifetime project. The best way to improve your vocabulary is to use a dictionary regularly. You might carry around a pocket dictionary and use it to look up new words. Or, you can keep a list of words to look up at the end of the day. Concentrate on roots, prefixes and endings.

The post-reading review
After you finish reading, you need to determine what you learned. Did you achieve your purpose? Try to answer the questions you created beforehand. If you aren’t able to answer them, go back and look for answers near your notes. This process will solidify the knowledge in your mind and give you better recall. You’ll know what you learned, what you didn’t, and whether or not you need to go deeper into the text or look for other sources.
Monitor effectiveness.
Good readers monitor their attention, concentration and effectiveness. They quickly recognize if they've missed an idea and backup to reread it

The Skill of Reading

June 1999 Principal Keith Lord slowly chewed and swallowed an inch-long worm, this is to comply with his promise to the students of Melvin Avenue Elementary School that he would eat a worm if they read 4,000 books and completed 1,200 book reports.

RosamondElementary School students marched out of class chanting ``We will, we will dunk you'' as they prepared to dunk Principal Tim Feickert as a reward for reading. Wearing a Rosamond Elementary School T-shirt and shorts, Feickert perched on a dunk tank. A dunk tank, also known as a dunking booth or dunking machine, is an attraction mainly used in funfairs, fundraisers, and personal parties. Basically, a dunk tank consists of a large tank of water, over which a seat is suspended.  seat as pupils threw softballs at a target that, when hit, dropped him into the water. He got dunked by about every third youngster.

Reading is a means of language acquisition, of communication, and of sharing information and ideas. It can be safely say that it is the true backbone of most learning.Academically, reading is the student's gear to cope with his/her studies as the student go up the educational ladder, more reading is required.

Statistics shows that filipino students reading skills increased. Department of Education(DepEd) reported 21.36 percent increase from National Achievement Test(NAT) results from 2006-2009 The 11.67 percentage gains were in all subject areas and pointed to a steady improvement in the primary education of the country’s public school system.

This statistics shows a movement of improvement but a difference from 66.33 mean percentage score  from 54.66 in 2006 is rather slow. it is not even close to a "mastery level" the main culprit of student's poor performance according to Dr. Yolanda Quijano, head of the DepEd’s Bureau of Elementary Education is reading problems.

So, how does one increase his/her reading skills to ensure their academic progress?
does the authority or the principals need to eat worms or engage to a water tank dunk?

Increase your reading comprehension and tips on improving your reading skills will be tackled on next post.
